The annual inflation rate increased to a seven-year high of 8.75 per cent for the week ended May 31, up from 8.24 per cent in the previous week. The inflation is at the highest level since February 2001.The WPI for manufactured products was up by 0.7 per cent, while for primary articles it was up by 0.9 per cent. Hi people! Really it has been a long wait for Kamal’s fans after Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu and the legend has not disappointed them. He has established emphatically that the wait is certainly a worthwhile one and has proved time and again that cinema is his lifeline.

The 70 crore magnum opus challenges Hollywood films and has even set up a benchmark for their films. Special kudos to producer Aascar Ravichandran for ably supporting the actor and the director in their pursuit of rendering a world class Tamil cinema - especially in the technical department.

The grandiose scenes spellbinds the viewer and the crew has worked hard to sustain this feeling through out the film. The film opens with the camera zooming on Chennai from the ocean and gently stops at Chozha era when Saivites and Vaishnavites locked horns with each other.

Kamal’s performance, Ravi Varman’s cinematography, Devi Sri Prasad’s re-recording and Thanikachalan’s editing teleport the viewer to a different era which would take a long time for them to unravel, particularly the scene where the Saivite King orders the statue of Lord Ranganatha to be thrown into the sea and threatens the ardent Vaishnavite Kamal to utter Om Namashivaya just once. And when Kamal begins OM, the suspense is killing not only for the king but also the audience. Though the film begins with Chozha period, it subsequently moves to modern times, bringing with it adventure, high flying chases. etc

In the music department, the Tamil flavor is retained only in the Mukunda number while in the others, Himesh Reshammiah’s difficulty in unwrapping himself from Hindi clutches is discernible. K S Ravikumar’s directorial acumen is revealed in Ulaganayagane number where he has picturized Kamal’s make-up secrets.

Dasavatharam’s main forte is technical expertise, which the technicians have utilized without the viewer being aware of it. Top of the line technical excellence is perceptible in Tsunami scenes, car chasing shots, Chozha period sequences and the scene where all the Kamals come together. On the flipside, if the focus given to technical brilliance had been given to a stronger storyline and character portrayal, the film would have earned a perfect TEN. Dasavatharam Rocks!

Steve Waugh calls him the next big thing in Indian cricket.Sharukh has bought him for a whopping 3.7 crores for his IPL.The media is touting him as one of the world's fastest bowler.Ishant Sharma is tall,lanky and has the ability to become one of India's best bowler.But wait ,he is just 19 years old.The stat of Ishant isn't impressive.He has got 12 wickets from 5 test matches and 14 wickets from his 10 ODIs.Munaf patel has 22 wickets from 5 test matches,12 from his 10 ODIs.He spends more time recovering from various injuries than actually playing. Lakshmipathy Balaji got 13 wickets from 5 test matches and 13 wickets from 10 ODIs.Ashish Nehra has got 19 wickets from 5 ,13 wickets from 10 ODIs.All these three are out of the scene as of now.The same thing shouldn't happen to Ishant.5 test matches and 10 ODIs is definitely not a measure of one's ability.The point i am trying to make is Ishant still has a very long long way to go.He has another 15 years at his disposal.Especially playing in Indian conditions are going to be extremely tough and will be a test of his physical as well as mental strength.There are going to be career threatening injuries.Ishant hasn't achieved anything but capable of achieving.The 3.7 crores and whole media frenzy has to be handled by Ishant with prudence.I doubt whether Ishant has the maturity to handle this and I am afraid that the media will jeopardize the career of yet another fast bowler in India.

The south african cricket team yet again lost a match in world cup because of the rain gods and the botched duckworth-lewis system(in 1992 there was a still more controversial system in vogue for the rain affected matches).This time it was the u-19 world cup.The proteas did well in restricting the indian batsmen to 159.Chasing a meagre total of 160, the proteas floundered at the start.They were at 17/3 off 8.3 overs when it started raining.Had it not rained it would have been a facile victory for the south africans.But it started raining as it was South Africa playing in a world cup match.The targets were revised and they needed 99 from 98 balls .The young south africans could not face the pressure of getting run a ball and succumbed.I am not trying to take anything away from the indians but india gained advantage because of the duck-worth lewis system.

1992 world cup

This was the first world cup to feature south africa.South Africa advanced to the semi-finals.They were playing england.England set a victory target of 253 from 45 overs.Rain interupted play before the last ball of the 43rd over. South Africa had then required 22 runs off 13 balls for victory. With 2 overs lost to rain, the target was reduced to 21 runs from only 1 ball. The controversial result at the end of the game gave birth to the Duckworth lewis of calculating targets in rain-affected matches.

2003 world cup

South Africans were set a victory target of 269 from 50 overs.The south Africans were well on their way to victory. The South African team gave to the batsmen a table showing the equivalent number of runs required after each ball, to equal the Sri Lankan total, for the remainder of the match assuming that rain would conclude the game after that particular ball. One ball before the rain interruption began, South Africa scored the requisite number of runs shown on the table. On the next ball it appeared that the batsmen could take a run but they decided not to take a risk, believing that their table showed the number of runs to win, not to tie. Thus the match ended in a tie, and South Africa lost all mathematical chance of proceeding to the Super Six.

In 1992 it was the dubious rule that was in place for rain affected games that denied proteas entering the finals.It was still worse in 2003.It was kicked out of the tournament in the preliminary stages itself.The only difference this time it was their own mistakes in calculating the target.It was their mistake but it was not a big mistake to be kicked out of the world cup.

The problem with these rules for rain interrupted matches is the team which is chasing the target has a slight disadvantage.If rain comes suddenly and the match is abandoned with say 10 more overs left.The result is going to declared based on the duckworth-lewis.Say the team batting first won the match on d/l method.In this case the team batting second would have batted without knowing the target itself.To annul the advantage that the opponent has,the team batting second has to calculate its target for every over(even every ball in extreme cases) which is very tedious and leads to confusion as in the case of 2003 world cup.The team batting second definitely has a slight disadvantage which is not fair.So instead of these rules the match may be resumed or played again on the next day atleast for the world cup matches.

Budget 2008 passed by P.chidambaram was a fairly good one.The most debated aspect of the budget was the waiver of 60,000 crore debts which is going to benefit three crore small and marginal farmers.M.S Swaminathan has welcomed this proposal that this step boost the agricultural sector.He is an stalwart in this sector and hence this move by the government must be a good one considering innumerable number of farmer suicides.This cannot be the final solution i believe.Farmers shouldn't depend upon the monsoons for their livelihood.For that agriculture should be approached more scientifically and awareness should be created among farmers.Eminent persons like M.S.SWAMINATHAN and NAMMAZHVAR are doing it.The government should take the responsibilty in creating awareness among farmers and work meticulously for that.

I believe in the fact that 'EDUCATION IS THE ONLY MEANS TO ATTAIN EQUALITY'.Announcement of mid-day meal scheme for upper primary classes,new iits in andhra,bihar,rajasthan are welcome moves.The basic infrastructure of rural schools and government schools should be improved and they should on par with the city schools.I hope 20% higher outlay for education will help in improving the standard of education in rural areas.

More funds has been allocated to health sector and the ministry of women and child development.It is heartening that the finance minister has addressed the key sectors .Although i am against 1,05,600 crores being allocated to defence there is no other go i believe.The rising amount of weapons in our neighbouring countries pakistan and china forces to spend more for defence.I wonder how people(in every country of the world) can be so stupid in allocating this much money for weapons.There has to be a solution somewhere.Sixteen thousand crores has been allocated to the NATIONAL RURAL EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEE PROGRAMME which was a huge success in the last year.

Income tax exemption limit has been hiked to Rs.1.5 lakh.The i t exemption limit has also been hiked for women and senior citizens.Excise duty has been slashed for small cars.Maruti Udyog and Hyundai have already reduced the prices of their cars.Excise duties on pharmaceuticals has also been slashed.There are many other things in the budget which satisfies the middle class.
The opposition party as usual has blamed the budget that it has been framed keeping the impending elections in mind.It doesn't matter to the common man whether the budget has been framed keeping in mind the elections or not.At the end of the day he is greatly benefitted.And that is what matters.But that doesn't mean UPA will come back to power because of this budget alone.People of India are clever.

A.R MURUGADOSS ARRESTED

The director of the movie 'GHAJINI' starring Aamir and Asin has been arrested by the salem police.It is a well known fact that Ghajini is the remake of a tamil movie with the same name.The arrest took place based on the charges filed by the producer of the tamil Ghajini Chandrasekar.The tamil Ghajini has exceeded the budget and hence inspite of being a super hit the film producer didn't reap rich dividends.So Murugadoss the director had agreed to do another film for the same producer to compensate for the losses.But it didn't happen.Also permission has not been got from the Tamil producer before starting the Hindi Ghajini and the remake rights were never obtained.These things led the producer to lodge a complaint against A.R Murugadoss.The arrest of Murugadoss can have a heavy bearing on the status of Ghajini’s Hindi version. Let us hope the arrest doesn't disrupt the making of 'Ghajini'.

Sethusamudram shipping canal project

The UPA Government has decided to go ahead with the sethusamudram project.It is going to file a affidavit in court seeking a lift on the ban on sethusamudram project.The central government is even ready to reconsider the the path of sethu channel .The reason is that it doesn't want to hurt the sentiments of Hindus.Let us come to the politics a little later.I wanted to know about the sethusamudram shipping canal project(SSPC) in detail.So i checked wikipedia.I ll share with you some of the things that i read.
SSPC is linking Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar between India and srilanka.The ultimate aim is to create a shipping channel by increasing the depth of the sethu channel.The sethu channel is 83 kilometers long.And this idea was first conceived in the year 1860.
The proponents of the SSPC say that the shipping channel reduces a travel distance of 650kms.That is the ships need not circumvent around SriLanka and the sethu channel would provide a short cut.They say SSPC would be a boost to the economic and industrial development of coastal Tamil Nadu.
Captain Balakrishnan who is against the implementation of this project has his own views.
1)The sethu channel after the project will be 12 metre depth.He says in the present there are only very large ships used which require a depth of 17 metres.So none of these ships will be able to use the channel.
2)It seems that the ships usually travel at a speed of 12 knots.Since the depth is only 12 meters the ships cannot travel at this speed through the channel.It can only travel at a speed of 8 knots.So the time saved is very very less.So why waste 2400 crores for this project.

The environmentalists raise their concern on this project.They fear the project(the dredging process to increase the depth of the channel) will jeopardise the existence of marine life.The oil spills,marine pollution and so many other things will affect the marine life.
But the government would not have commenced the project without looking into the above issues.
I don't know whether the proponents of the project are right or those against it are right.Let me put forth my concern.

BJP is opposing the project because the project requires the demolition of a bridge built by lord Ram and they say the project requires reallignment.The government should not hurt the sentiments of Hindu people.BJP is not interested whether the project really serves people or not.They don't talk about the real problem and talk some rubbish to get the hindu votes.I am not an athiest.I am telling you "if Ram was alive today he would have consented for the demolition of the bridge if it is going to be really helpful to the people".
An official release from the chief minister's office said that there was 'no historical evidence' to show that Ram lived or that he was an 'engineering expert' to build a bridge across the narrow sea dividing India and Sri Lanka which is totally irrelevant to the issue.He doesn't even say a single word on how sethusamudram project will be beneficial.He doesn't clarify on the various doubts regarding the project.With elections round the corner the central government is ready to reallign the path.The media conducts debates on whether the bridge was man-made or was formed naturally.Who cares!There should be more public debating regarding the pros and cons of the sethusamudram project.

Writer Sujatha passes away

It is very sad that one of the most prolific writers in tamil Mr.Sujatha is no more.Though i have not read many of his books i have read his 'Katradhum petradhum' in Anandha vikatan.I have read 'Srirangathu thevadhaigal' but it was long time ago.He is multi-faceted and it amazes me.He writes about anything and everything under the sun.And his aim was to make people understand science through 'TAMIL'.He was the one to bring science fiction to tamil literature i believe.The most important of all he played an important role in developing the 'ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES' while working in Bhel electronics which is used even in remote villages these days.May his soul rest in peace.Check out the link below to read Kamal's condolence .He was one of sujatha's close friends.Reading it will give a different perspective of Writer sujatha

Cricket Australia (CA) today charged Australian opener Matthew Hayden with a breach of its Code of Behaviour for making offensive remarks against Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in a radio interview.The burly Australian cricketer was charged under Rule 9 of the CA Code of Behaviour, which prohibits detrimental public comment, a CA release said."Rule guidelines prohibit public denigration of other players against whom they have or will play," it said.

Today was the day it all started.Feb 27 is the day on which the godhra train burning incidents happened in the year 2002.The train burning incident was ensued by riots through out gujrat .According to an official estimate, 1044 people were killed in the violence - 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus including those killed in the Godhra train fire. Another 223 people were reported missing, 2,548 injured, 919 women widowed and 606 children orphaned.More than five years have passed by.But i am still horrified and in a state of shock when i hear the term 'Gujrat riots'.How can one easily forget the gang rapes of pregnant women,mob tearing open a pregnant woman's stomach and killing the baby,mob severing the hands and legs of a muslim M.P and burning him to death.Judiciary is doing its bit in the Gujrat riot cases .Many cases were transferred to Maharashtra from gujrat for fair trials.12 were given life sentence in the infamous gang rape case of bilkis bano on jan 18,2008.Today in one of the news channels it was exposed that one of the accused in the train burning case is blind and he is in jail for the past 5 years. Still the judiciary has a long way to go and it must ensure that all the victims of the Gujrat riots get their justice.And the justice has to be delivered at the earliest.

Some friends of mine say that the central government ,the media are biased against the BJP and the hindus.Especially the media has created an illusion that only the muslims were affected during the gujrat riots.They say that even Hindus were affected and the official figure confirms it.The official figure includes the death in police firing.So it is not a genocide against a particular community.I don't see the Gujrat riots as an atrocity against the Muslims.Nor do i say that the 'sangh parivar' are wrongly indicted in the riots case.Gujrat riot was an atrocity against human beings,gross violation of human rights.And whoever did it must be punished irrespective of their religion.
I still wonder how can people be so cruel!!

Kamal fans have to wait a little more to hear the audion of the much awaited film of the year DASAVATHARAM.The much awaited audio launch of ‘Dasavadharam’, which was scheduled to be held in March, is now postponed to April. The venue of the event has also been changed to ymca grounds(Nandanam) .It was earlier planned to be held at Nehru indoor stadium.
However, there will be no change in the grandeur of the function. The big weights from various languages would attend the function. Apart from the chief guest Jackie Chan, the superstar studded event will have Mammootty, Mohanlal, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, and Amitabh Bachan. Talks are on to bring two superstars from Kannada industry. Sony Audio Company, which has bagged the audio rights, is coordinating the arrangements for the function.
The audio rights have been sold at an unprecedented rate. The amount, it is said is something, which no Tamil audio track has ever fetched.
‘Dasavadharam’ has broken the record in terms of TV channel rights as well. It has been sold at a rate of Rs. 10 lakhs higher than that of Sivaji!
